Abstract

This study investigated depression and self-esteem as predictors of suicidal ideation among inmates of correctional centres in Rivers State. The study was guided by three research questions and their corresponding null hypotheses. The design for the study was correlational research design. The population was 400 inmates from correctional centres in three prisons in Rivers State. The sample size for the study is 400 inmates which was drawn from the population using purposive sampling technique. Three instruments were used for the study. They are, Depression Inventory (DI), Self-esteem Scale (SES) and Suicidal Ideation Inventory (SII). Research instruments were validated by three experts in the field of Measurement and Evaluation, from Department of Educational Psychology, Guidance and Counselling, University of Port Harcourt. Both Face and content validity of the instruments was done. The construct validity was also done using factor analysis. To ensure the reliability of the instruments Cronbach alpha (a) technique was used for all the instruments. Copies of the instruments were administered on 30 inmates who were not part of the sample for the study and then the scores obtained were subjected to Cronbach alpha technique. The alpha coefficients of 0.67, 0.69 and 0.77, were obtained from depression, self-esteem and suicidal ideation respectively. Data was collected by the researcher with the help of some research assistants. Research questions were answered using simple regression and multiple regression. Also hypotheses were tested using simple regression associated with ANOVA and multiple regression associated with ANOVA. Results revealed that depression and self-esteem independently and collectively predict suicidal ideation among inmates of correctional centres in Rivers State. It was recommended that school counsellors and other mental health professionals should play an important role in counselling for depression, self-esteem and suicidal ideation among inmates and offering and/or referring them for the appropriate psychological preventions and interventions.
