Abstract

This study investigated the suitability of soils in Uruan for foundation design. The samples were taken from ten boreholes (BH) by drilling with the aid of hand auger to the maximum depth of 3m, and were further subjected to various laboratory analysis. According to the findings, the soils are mainly clayey sand and sandy clay, the lithographic sequence consist of very soft to soft sandy clay between 1-3m in BH2 at Ituk Mbang and BH1 and 4 at Ndon Ebom while medium to coarse clayey sand was encountered at Ituk Mbang in BH1, BH3, and BH5, and at Ndon Ebom in BH2 and BH5, and medium clayey sand overlying fine sandy clay in BH4 and BH3 at Ituk Mbang. The soil has a moisture content of 18.5-18.9%, liquid limit of 33.2-39.4%, plastic limit of 20.05-24.45%, showing low to medium compressible clay and silt. The particle size distribution analysis showed poorly to moderately sorted, also it contained 23.7-24.0% of clay, 8.4-8.8% of silt and 70.9-78.8% of sands. Values of the undrained cohesion ranges from 35 to 40KN/m2 and angle of internal friction are between 4 to 5º. Bearing pressure ranges from 88.07 to 108.8.09KN/m2 and settlement of 43.5mm to 47.3mm was obtained demonstrating that the settlement sum is acceptable. Based on the research of foundation potentials, it has been determined that the sandy clayey soil possesses sufficient quality to support raft foundations. Additionally, the soil exhibits a significant thickness, which effectively mitigates the impact of these foundations within the designated area.
