The effects of drug abuse on students’ academic performance: an overview of some polytechnics, in North-Eastern part of Nigeria

Abstract

This research work is concerned with the effects of drug abuse on students’ academic performance of some selected Nigerian polytechnics. The reason for this is that some students involved in drug abuse, which led to their poor academic performance as reveals in this study. Data was collected through distribution of questionnaires in the study area which include: Federal polytechnic Bali, Bauchi, Mubi, Damaturu, Maiduguri and state polytechnic, Yola. The total population of the study is one hundred and sixty (162) which is found through simple random sampling technique. Questionnaire is used as the principle instrument for data collection. The use of questionnaire is based on the assumption that affords the respondents a great confident in their anonymity in respond of furnishing us with qualitative information on sensitive issues. Simple percentage is used for the analysis of data in the study. Chi-square is use for the analysis of data, the findings indicate that drug abuse has significant effects on students’ academic performance in this research. Therefore, some useful recommendation are made such as; have proper rules and regulations that prohibit the use and abuse of drugs in order to avoid cases of continuous decline in academic performance, in respect to the study outcomes.
