Perception and awareness of physiotherapy profession among junior college students in rural area

Abstract

Introduction: Physiotherapist are movement expert who improve quality of life through prescribed exercise hand on care and patient education. Junior college students from the science field are the future Physiotherapists of India. It’s important to them to have appropriate awareness about physiotherapy as a health care service and have a positive perception about the profession as a career. For this reason this study is undertaken to assess knowledge concerning Physiotherapy among junior college students in rural areas using this questionnaire.

Method: The cross sectional study was undertaken with the help of questionnaire which was distributed to 125 junior college students. Data was collected and statistically analyzed.

Results: On an average 26% population are aware about physiotherapy profession. 74% population are not aware about physiotherapy profession.20℅ student consider physiotherapy as a health care profession. 72℅ student have not taken physiotherapy yet. 70% student think they need a referral from a doctor to see a physiotherapist.

Conclusion: This study concluded that there is lack of awareness and knowledge among junior college students about physiotherapy profession. So there is a need of educating them about physiotherapy profession so they choose better carrier option.
