Abstract

The global spread of English has resulted in diverse varieties and adaptations of the language in multicultural contexts. This article explores the historical context of English as a global language, its diversity in different cultural settings, and the strategies employed by speakers to adapt and accommodate their language use. The article begins by discussing the role of British colonialism and American influence in the spread of English, as well as the impact of globalization on its current status as a lingua franca. It then examines the linguistic features and cultural influences on various English varieties, such as World Englishes and English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). The article also investigates the adaptation and accommodation strategies used by speakers in multicultural interactions, including code-switching, code-mixing, and translanguaging practices. Furthermore, it discusses the implications for language education, highlighting the importance of teaching English as an International Language (EIL) and incorporating cultural awareness and sensitivity in language classrooms. The article concludes by addressing future directions for research, the ongoing evolution of English in multicultural contexts, and the potential impact on other languages and cultures. It emphasizes the significance of understanding English diversity and adaptation in a globalized world and calls for embracing linguistic and cultural diversity.
