Effect of Trayushanadi lauha on thyroid function test and lipid profile parameters: A case report
Abstract
Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder characterized by an underactive thyroid gland, leading to decreased production of thyroid hormones. This condition affects individuals of all ages and genders, with women being more susceptible than men. The primary causes of hypothyroidism include autoimmune thyroiditis, iodine deficiency, thyroid surgery, radiation therapy and certain medications. Common symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, constipation, dry skin and hair loss. Diagnosis of hypothyroidism is made through blood tests measuring thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroid hormones (T3 and T4).
Hypothyroidism can be understood as a Santarpanajanya vyadhi with Agnimandya at both Koshta and Shakha (Dhatu) level. As it is a condition involving multiple bodily systems, the signs and symptoms depend on the extent of involvement of Srotases. Hence Apatarpana line of management is required in this condition. This can be done by correcting Agni at Koshta and Dhatu levels. Trayushanadi lauha is a formulation described in Medoroga chikitsa which possesses Deepana, Pachana, Lekhana, Karshana and Rasayana properties.
The current case report is an attempt to appreciate the effect of Trayushanadi lauha in managing hypothyroidism with significant changes in thyroid function test (TFT) and lipid profile parameters.
