Abstract

Flooding has been a significant environmental hazard in Anambra State, Nigeria, and worldwide, which prompted this research. This study adopts a combination of Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing as a tool for the study and mapping out flood assessment in the selected local government areas of Anambra State. Floods seen in this research work was caused by much water loge of some places basically by heavy rainfall and other human activities. With a view to suggest ways to control and manage this hazard, were explicitly pointed out these objectives how to identify a systematic approach that will provide effective framework for evaluating flood simulation, identify the different steps that determines flood risk areas, identify factors in a GIS environment in order to carry out spatial analysis and mapping of these factors, produce a flood risk map of the study area. The Nigerian Digital Elevation Model was extracted to the study area by mask using the spatial analysis tool via extraction methods of ArcGIS 10.2 Software version and DTM shape file were classified into three (3) different water levels based on the sea level height of the study area. The drainage analysis helps us to know how water flows in to the Study area which causes flood when overflowed from the river basin, it shows how to build the drainage as to ensure runoff of water in the Study area there by controlling it. The result of the various classification in this project have shown the capability of GIS and Remote sensing in solving the problem of detecting flood prone areas in Anambra State and Nigeria at large. Flood assessment using simulation model is a significant step in trying to tackle cases of flood disaster within the country especially in this period of global change, when water level rise and other abnormality have been observed.
