IGBO apprenticeship and entrepreneurship development in Enugu State
Abstract
The study evaluated the relationship between the Igbo apprenticeship and entrepreneurship development in Enugu State. Specifically, the study sought to: examine the relationship between "Igba-boy" (become an apprentice) and Management skill needs of entrepreneurship in Enugu State; identify the relationship between "Imu Oru Aka" (learn a craft) and innovative skills of entrepreneurship in Enugu State and evaluate the relationship between "Imu Ahia" (learn a trade) and communication skill acquisition of entrepreneurship in Enugu State. The research design was descriptive survey technique. The area of the study was Enugu metropolis in Enugu state. The sample size of 324 respondents was drawn from population of 789 Igbo apprentice members from different major markets in Enugu Metropolis namely Kenyetha market, Ogbete market, Timber market Abakpa, Artisans markets and Gariki market Enugu Metropolis. Taro Yemane sample technique was used to narrow 789 population down to researchable size of 324 respondents. The research question were answered with simple percentage, mean and deviation. The hypotheses were tested with single regression. The empirical results showed that "Igba-boy" (become an apprentice) had a significant positive relationship with mgt. skill needs of entrepreneurship in Enugu State (r=.059 <. 878, p>.05); Imu Oru Aka” (learn a craft) had a significant positive relationship with innovative skills of entrepreneurship in Enugu State (r= .772 <.872, p>.05) and “Imu Ahia” (learn a trade) had a significant positive relationship with communication skill acquisition of entrepreneurship in Enugu State (r= .507 <.885, p>.05). The study recommended that the wish and desire of individuals who wants to undergo apprenticeship process needs to be sought as it will help them to efficient during and after the process. Hence, individuals should not be forced against their will.
