Prevalence of class cutting in schools and its impact on students attitudes: A quantitative approach
Abstract
This study utilized a descriptive research design to explore the prevalence of class cutting among students and its impact on their attitudes. Employing a quantitative approach, data were collected through surveys administered to all respondents, adhering to strict inclusion and exclusion criteria. The research was conducted at Balite National High School in Balite San Francisco, Surigao Del Norte, Philippines. This medium-sized school is managed by a Head Teacher and a Master Teacher, with 29 teachers and 2 non-teaching staff, serving a diverse student population across Junior and Senior High School levels. The study focused on Senior High School students in grades 11 and 12, examining their reasons for skipping class and subsequent effects on their academic performance and engagement. Findings revealed that 45% of students reported skipping class without permission in the past month. The primary reasons cited include difficulty understanding the material (44.8%), poor relationships with teachers or peer pressure (30.5%), and lack of interest in the subject (21.9%). Students generally agreed that skipping class negatively impacts their academic performance, participation, and overall interest in school. No significant differences in perceptions were found across different demographic groups, indicating a universal recognition of the adverse effects of absenteeism. Based on these findings, recommendations were made for students, teachers, school administration, curriculum planners, and future researchers to address and mitigate the factors contributing to class cutting. This study highlights the need for comprehensive interventions to enhance student engagement and reduce absenteeism.
