A cognitive stylistic analysis of George Orwell's “Animal Farm”
Abstract
The current study aims at providing a cognitive stylistic analysis of George Orwell's “Animal Farm”. It achieves this aim through using conceptual blending theory (henceforth CBT). So, the purpose of this study is to examine the nature of conceptual blending as it appears in a literary work. The study aims at identifying the input spaces that can form the blend; specifying the generic spaces that are general to the identified input spaces; finding out the emergent meanings that are resulted due to the blend of the two input space. To do this work, the study follows a number of steps which are providing the theoretical knowledge concerning cognitive linguistics and cognitive stylistics with reference to the main parts of CBT; applying the previous theory to different selected texts of the novel. The analysis reveals that conceptual blending theory tackles a specific feature of the literary text and the new emergent meaning can lead to a very fruitful strategy that may introduce a holistic investigation of the selected texts of “Animal Farm”.
