Comparative analysis of industrial Sandcrete blocks and developed Sandcrete bricks based on their compressive strength
Abstract
Sandcrete, a composite material primarily composed of sand, cement, and water, has been widely used in construction across developing countries due to its cost-effectiveness and availability of raw materials. This study aimed at studying the comparatively the industrial sandcrete blocks and the developed sandcrete bricks in with respect to their compressive strength. The sandcrete blocks were supplied to the local building and construction industries by local block manufacturers, while the alternative sandcrete bricks were molded with sand measured in various proportions of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25%,as a colourant to resemble fired red brick product. Compressive strength test was done in other to obtain the strength of the moulded block samples. The samples were tested at five different intervals of 7days, to make it 35 days. The compression testing machine was used to obtain the results of the developed bricks and the industrial sandcrete blocks, and the both were compared. The result showed that the developed sandcrete bricks exhibit a higher compressive strength compared to industrial sandcrete blocks, since by the 21st day, the developed sandcrete bricks is already more than double that of the industrial blocks, and by 35 days, it is over twice as strong. At 35 days, the developed sandcrete bricks achieve a compressive strength of 5.23 N/mm², which is significantly higher than the 2.25 N/mm² observed for the industrial sandcrete blocks. The consistent and substantial increase in compressive strength for the developed sandcrete bricks indicates a more durable and reliable material that can better withstand environmental and mechanical stresses over time. This also suggests that the developed bricks can be better applied in load-bearing, and in structures where higher compressive strength is required, than the industrial sandcrete blocks.
