The opportunities and challenges in pursuit of higher education among alternative learning system graduates
Abstract
This study employed a multiple case design and cross-case analysis to investigate the educational experiences of individuals in the Alternative Learning System (ALS), focusing on three cases: Case 1 emphasizes the obstacles caused by familial responsibilities, while Case 2 shows that academic success is possible even in the face of earlier failures. Case 3 highlights the significance of self-awareness and personal growth in pursuing educational ambitions. The results show that individual circumstances have a substantial impact on educational motives and challenges and although some people could encounter major challenges, others are able to thrive with assistance and resilience. The findings reveal that personal circumstances significantly influence educational motivations and challenges. Overall, the study emphasizes how alternative education programs must have specially designed support systems to meet the individual needs of students. Recommendations include implementing flexible schedules, providing family support resources, mentorship opportunities, counseling services and fostering an inclusive environment to enhance student engagement and success.
