Brief Overview of Architecture in Bosnia and Herzegovina from Prehistory to Present
Abstract
The architecture of Bosnia and Herzegovina has so far been treated from different aspects and through the lens of different scientific and artistic disciplines: archaeology, history, fine arts and sculpture, architecture (master's theses, doctoral dissertations, studies accompanying more or less extensive infrastructure works - roads, hydropower plants, spatial plans, for example)... Architecture is, most often, processed according to a certain historical period of Bosnia and Herzegovina (the period of the Ottoman Empire, the period of Austro-Hungarian administration, the period of the Kingdom SHS/Kingdom of Yugoslavia, SFRY period, for example). The processing of the architecture of some of these epochs, according to the scientific approach, leaned, more or less in detail, on the architecture of previous historical periods. In this paper, the architecture of Bosnia and Herzegovina is viewed 'in totality', through all historical epochs, from prehistory to the present day. The author's desire is to 'present architecture as a framework for people's lives', both the individual and his collectivities, from the family to the state as a whole. This bold idea is based on the authors' published books and scientific works, most of all on his theory of Architecturally Defined Space (ADS), according to which in the definition of architecture (from the design process, through construction to use), not a single essential input that defines architecture is omitted.
