Global advances in tobacco control policies: A review of evidence, implementation models, and public health outcomes
Abstract
Tobacco use remains a leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality worldwide, necessitating comprehensive tobacco control policies. This paper reviews the evidence supporting key interventions, including taxation, smoking bans, and warning labels, highlighting their effectiveness in reducing consumption and improving public health outcomes. It examines successful implementation models, focusing on the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, and explores challenges in policy adoption, enforcement, and regulation of emerging products such as e-cigarettes. Quantifiable public health outcomes, including reduced smoking rates and improved health indicators, are discussed alongside limitations and opportunities for enhancement. The paper concludes by offering policy recommendations for strengthening global efforts, emphasizing enforcement, equity, and regulating alternative products. Future research directions and the role of stakeholders in advancing public health are also explored, underscoring the importance of sustained international collaboration in tobacco control.
