Abstract

Potato plays a very significant role in the agriculture economy In Uttar Pradesh potato is grown in 6.10 lakh hectare with a production of 15.32 million tonne. It plays an important role in the state economy and well being of the farmers. The present study was conducted in Firozabad district of Uttar Pradesh. Out of 9 blocks of Firozabad one block namely Narkhi was selected purposively. Two villages were selected on the basis of maximum coverage of area under potato crop randomly. 120 farmers including 40 marginal, 28 small, 28 medium and 24 large farmers were selected by stratified random sampling method. The farm labour data and required information of potato growing farmers pertaining to crop year 2018-19 was taken by personal survey method. The overall cost of Potato cultivation was worked out Rs 112030.37/ha . The cost of Cultivation was highest on large farms Rs 133411.1 followed by medium Rs 127665.38, small Rs 107158.83 and marginal farms Rs 79896.14. The major cost component was seed, cost contributing 22.17% followed by labour cost 19.46%. The overall cost of producing one quintal potato was Rs 477.14 and average price obtained was Rs 828.34 per quintal.

The overall gross return was found to be Rs 193335.50/ha. The overall net income per hectare was Rs 75479.95. It was also observed that net income was increasing with the increasing in size of holding. The overall benefit cost ratio was 1.72. The overall yield and cost of production was found to be 233.40 qt/ha and Rs. 480.00/qt respectively.
