Abstract

This research investigates the nuanced intersection of Meyerhold Acting Theory, developed by Vsevolod Mayer-Hold, with traditional ritual performances in India. The exploration unfolds the intricate interplay between biomechanics, symbolism, and emotional engagement within the context of Indian cultural expressions. Meyerhold's theory, emphasizing the fusion of physicality and emotion in acting, serves as a lens through which we examine the rich tapestry of traditional Indian performances.

The study delves into the principles of biomechanics within Mayer-Hold's theory, highlighting its significance in shaping authentic character portrayals. Concurrently, it scrutinizes select traditional Indian ritual performances, ranging from the vibrant Kathakali to the rhythmic Chhau dance, uncovering the cultural narratives, rituals, and symbolism embedded in these traditions.

The research problem centers on understanding how Mayer-Hold's theory aligns or contrasts with the nuanced expressions found in Indian ritual performances. The objectives include an exploration of biomechanics principles, an investigation into traditional performances, and a comparative analysis to unveil cultural nuances.

The significance of this research lies in bridging Western acting methodologies with the culturally rich performance traditions of India. The synthesis of these diverse perspectives contributes to a deeper global understanding of acting as an art form. Furthermore, it informs pedagogical approaches, fostering cross-cultural appreciation and collaboration in the realm of the performing arts.

As the study unfolds, it navigates the complexities and resonances, offering insights into the intricate dance between theory and tradition. This exploration enriches the global landscape of the performing arts, fostering a deeper appreciation for the diversity and richness of cultural expressions.
