Abstract

This study explores the nexus between illicit drug prevalence in Zambia and its impact on national security. Using qualitative methods, in-depth interviews were conducted with nine experienced drug law enforcement officers to assess the threats posed by drug trafficking and consumption. The findings reveal a strong link between illicit drugs and organized crime, money laundering, corruption, and potential terrorist financing. Additionally, drug use has contributed to economic distortions, youth school attrition, increased crime rates, and public health concerns such as HIV infections among People Who Inject Drugs (PWIDs). The study underscores the urgent need for early warning systems, multi-sectoral collaboration, public awareness campaigns, and strengthened anti-corruption mechanisms. Addressing these issues is critical to safeguarding Zambia’s stability, governance, and socio-economic development.
