Integrating AI in Public Transport Workforces: A Review of HR Challenges and Opportunities
Abstract
This study provides an in-depth exploration of the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in public transport workforces, identifying the resultant human resources (HR) challenges and opportunities. The main objectives were to understand how AI technologies are being implemented in public transport systems, the impact of these technologies on the workforce, and the role of HR in facilitating a smooth transition. Employing a systematic literature review and content analysis, the study analyzed academic journal articles, industry reports, and governmental publications from 2010 to 2024, focusing on AI's application in public transport and its implications for HR management. The findings reveal that AI technologies offer significant potential to enhance operational efficiencies, safety, and passenger experiences in public transport. However, these advancements also pose challenges, including the need for skills development, potential job displacement, and ethical concerns related to privacy and bias. HR departments are at the forefront of addressing these challenges, employing strategies such as training and development programs, ethical guidelines for AI use, and stakeholder engagement to navigate the AI integration process successfully. The study concludes that while AI integration in public transport presents substantial challenges, it also offers opportunities for workforce enhancement and operational improvement. Strategic HR management, including comprehensive training programs, ethical AI deployment, and stakeholder collaboration, is critical for harnessing the benefits of AI. Future research is recommended to explore long-term workforce implications and the effectiveness of HR strategies in the evolving AI-enhanced public transport ecosystem.
