The Contribution of Corporate Social Responsibility to Livelihoods and Environmental Sustainability: A Case study of Communities Around Geita Gold Mine, Tanzania
Abstract
Despite the integral role of corporate social responsibility in promoting community well-being, its contribution to community livelihoods and environmental sustainability remains questionable; this study examined the contribution of Geita Gold Mine's corporate social responsibility to both communities and environmental well-being in Geita District Council. Data collection was done using structured questionnaires and interviews. A sample of 144 households living adjacent to Geita gold mining in two wards, namely Bugulula and Nyamwilolelwa, was randomly selected for the study. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. The results of this study reveal that 70.8% of respondents agree that CSR projects provide adequate opportunities for local businesses, which act as a source of income for Indigenous people, while about 75% of respondents indicate that corporate social responsibility under GGM establishes environmental management infrastructures, such as wastewater management systems, to prevent the drainage of wastewater into the community, hence ensuring environmental sustainability. The study concludes that corporate social responsibility initiatives have significantly improved community well-being and environmental management in the Geita District, while the study recommends strengthening community involvement, improving communication strategies, and monitoring progress for the effectiveness of corporate social responsibility.
