Effects of Video Demonstration on Dentistry Students’ Cognitive, Clinical, and Critical Appraisal Performance in Laboratory Work
Abstract
The integration of video demonstration procedures in dental education has gained prominence as a tool for enhancing students’ cognitive, clinical, and critical appraisal performance. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of video demonstrations in improving dentistry students' learning outcomes at the University of Perpetual Help System Laguna (UPHSL). A researcher-made survey questionnaire was developed and validated to assess students’ cognitive, clinical, and critical appraisal performance. The study employed a descriptive-correlational research design involving dentistry students at UPHSL. Data were collected through Google Forms and analyzed using weighted mean, Pearson correlation, and regression analysis. Cronbach’s Alpha reliability scores were 0.954 for cognitive performance, 0.969 for clinical performance, and 0.971 for critical appraisal performance, ensuring the instrument's reliability. Findings revealed that students demonstrated very high cognitive performance in recall (M=3.61), understanding (M=3.55), and application (M=3.54). Similarly, clinical performance indicators, including proficiency (M=3.65), coordination (M=3.60), and compliance (M=3.58), were also rated very high. In terms of critical appraisal, students excelled in self-assessment (M=3.61), error detection (M=3.55), and correction (M=3.54), all interpreted as very high. Correlation analysis indicated a moderate positive relationship between cognitive and critical appraisal performance (r=0.754, p=0.000) and between cognitive and clinical performance (r=0.881, p=0.000). Clinical performance significantly predicted critical appraisal performance (R²=0.706, p=0.000). The study confirms the effectiveness of video demonstrations in enhancing students' performance. The strong correlation among cognitive, clinical, and critical appraisal skills suggests that video-based learning fosters comprehensive skill development.
