Housing Preferences, Housing Affordability, and Financial Commitment of Minimum Wage Workers in the City of Santa Rosa, Laguna
Abstract
Having a place to call home is essential to a healthy, stable life. However, minimum wage workers often struggle to secure affordable, adequate housing that meets their needs. This study explored the relationship between housing preferences, housing affordability, and financial commitment among minimum wage workers in Santa Rosa, Laguna. Using a descriptive-correlational research design, data was collected from 125 respondents through an online survey. A validated self-made questionnaire with acceptable reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha) was used. Statistical tools such as weighted mean and Pearson r correlation were employed to analyze the data. Results showed that participants generally had “preferred” housing preferences (mean = 3.23), “high” housing affordability (mean = 3.00), and “high” financial commitment (mean = 2.93). Significant moderate correlations were found between housing preference and housing affordability (r = 0.555, p = 0.000), and between housing preference and financial commitment (r = 0.495, p = 0.000). A stronger correlation was observed between housing affordability and financial commitment (r = 0.697, p = 0.000). An action plan was proposed to enhance access to affordable housing and promote financial responsibility among minimum wage earners. Findings revealed a preference for housing near essential services, with cost as a major deciding factor. Participants demonstrated strong financial discipline, prioritizing rent, food, and utilities. The study highlights the importance of tailored housing programs and financial literacy initiatives to support the well-being and economic security of low-income workers in Santa Rosa.
