The effectiveness of turmeric ethanol extract (Curcuma longa) ointment in accelerating the healing of grade ii burns in Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus)
Abstract
Burns are tissue damage from exposure to heat sources such as fire, chemicals, and electricity. Healing burns in diabetic patients is more complex because of high blood sugar levels that interfere with the healing process. One approach to healing burns is using medicinal plants, such as turmeric (Curcuma longa Linn.), which have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiseptic properties. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of turmeric ethanol extract ointment in healing grade II burns in Wistar rats. The experimental research design of the pre-and post-test control groups was used with the 4% and 8% turmeric ointment treatment groups, and the control group used Nebacettin® ointment. The results of phytochemical screening show the presence of alkaloid compounds, steroids, flavonoids, and tannins in turmeric extract. The analysis showed that 4% and 8% turmeric ointment significantly accelerated wound healing, especially in wound contraction and epithelialization periods. 8% turmeric ointment provides better results than 4% turmeric and control. This research supports using turmeric extract as an alternative therapy in healing burns.
