Abstract

Modern engineering teams face an ever-increasing load of meetings, asynchronous communication, and handoff friction, especially in hybrid and globally distributed settings. This paper proposes rethinking productivity by introducing the concept of agentic AI as the Night-Shift Intern: autonomous agents that work asynchronously during off-hours (overnight or non-core hours), producing concrete outcomes engineers can pick up in the morning. The paper outlines a conceptual framework, describes possible agent roles, discusses implementation considerations including trust, quality, and oversight. It concludes with leadership implications and suggestions for early adoption.
