Impacts of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools on students’ writing essays at the Faculty of Education HED101 class – NUS
Abstract
The proliferation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly influenced academic practices worldwide; however, its specific impact on student learning in the Pacific region remains underexplored. This study investigates the perceptions and impacts of AI tool usage on essay writing among students in the HED101 class at the National University of Samoa (NUS). Employing a qualitative methodology, data were collected through interviews with five participants. Findings reveal that approximately 80% of the sampled students utilize AI tools for essay composition, indicating widespread adoption. Participants reported perceived benefits, including enhanced time efficiency and assistance in overcoming writer's block. The study identified significant challenges, such as over-reliance on AI and an increased risk of inadvertent plagiarism. This research addresses a critical gap in the literature by providing initial insights into how Samoan students engage with AI for academic writing. It underscores the imperative for educators and institutions to develop guidelines that promote the ethical use of AI, thereby safeguarding academic integrity.
