This article seeks to provide a critical historical review of studies concerning the historian Abbas al-Azzawi by examining various aspects such as his personal biography, his writings, and his methodology in writing history, The article adopts an analytical review approach by classifying previous studies that focused on examining the figure of the Iraqi historian Al-Azzawi, who had a significant influence on the course of history. This was evident in the historical works published by Al-Azzawi, which demonstrated his great ability to record historical events and provide important information to researchers, as his writings contributed to laying the foundations of the documentary historical methodology for researchers and became indispensable primary sources for the study of modern Iraqi history, particularly during the so-called ‘Dark Age’, as they contained original sources and raw material from the medieval period.
