Teacher attitudes towards learners with reading difficulties in Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe district, Zimbabwe
Abstract
The study sought to establish teachers’ attitudes towards children with reading difficulties in Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe (UMP) district schools and the effect these had on learners. The descriptive survey method was used as the research design. Questionnaires were used to gather data, and these were personally handed to respondents. A sample of 100 teachers were selected through simple random sampling. The study found out that teachers’ attitudes, whether positive or negative affected learners’ efforts to read. Most teachers had reading programmes for learners with reading difficulties. Teachers used a variety of methods to assist learners with reading difficulties. It is recommended that school heads hold staff development meetings with teachers on the importance of reading and how to help learners with reading difficulties. Finally, the researcher recommends that further research be undertaken on a wider scale to determine the extent of effects of teachers’ attitudes towards learners with reading difficulties.
