Exploring opportunities and threats associated with conservation of Ground Pangolin (Smutsia temminckii) in Zimbabwe
Abstract
In Zimbabwe, the Ground pangolin (Smutsia temminckii) is considered as a Specially Protected Species hence calls for its protection and related habitat. The Ground pangolin occur both in protected areas and human settled resulting in varying immediate threats and opportunities to conservation success. We present opportunities and challenges in the practical interventions to improve conservation of ground pangolin by Government of Zimbabwe and its partners. We draw on online literature and newsprint, national pangolin database. A total of 39-online materials related to Zimbabwean ground pangolin, a national pangolin database from the Parks and Wildlife Management Authority- Pangolin Coordinator were analysed. Illegal hunting for trade, bushmeat, medicinal purposes and rituals, habitat destruction and removal from the bush for recreational purposes were identified as key threats to pangolin conservation. Improved stakeholder coordination in monitoring illegal trade and enhancing research, education and awareness, strengthening capacity building of law enforcement agents and members of the judiciary through tailor-made training programmes on handling pangolin cases were identified as key opportunities available to improving pangolin conservation in Zimbabwe. We therefore propose updating of Zimbabwe National Pangolin Strategy and Action Plan draft of 2015 to guide the implementation of intervention plans and procedures in the areas of law enforcement and habitat protection, research and monitoring, education and awareness and stakeholder coordination and capacity building.
